Jon Stewart on Jim Cramer

This article says how unfair the statements made by Jon Stewart were against Jim Cramer; and I totally agree with it. I am a huge fan of Stewart's and watch his show almost everyday - but this time I think he overdid it - he was slamming Cramer as if Cramer was a murderer. And this is not only about Stewart, it is about each and everyone who slams financial analysts for not knowing what was coming. Here's what I think: Jon Stewart never ever had a show where he brought in Bear's CEO and asked him why they had utilized a 35:1 leverage .. did he? Nope. But after everything happened, he wants to jump into the blaming pool to claim how simple it was to figure out that things were out of whack in the financial markets; and how he can't believe that someone like Cramer was so foolish to recommend buying Bear.

An analogy: Suppose you go take a class on guns, then go buy the one your instructor says is the best. You go home and the gun shoots a bullet at ya accidently, would you blame the teacher for telling you that the gun was the best; didn't you know that guns could shoot bullets? Did the teacher know that the reputed gun he was recommending to you would accidentally take off? Or would you blame the gun manufacturer?

I don't particularly enjoy Cramer's show, but I don't believe that someone who has a reputation for analyzing stock markets, and has a career as a host on a stock analytics program, will intentionally jeopardize all of that by making horribly wrong recommendations to the common man. Why would he do that? And ridiculing such a guy on national television is absolutely wrong.

If you hadn't foreseen the 'irrational exuberance' (ref: Alan Greenspan) blooming in the mortgage markets, and you got shot down because the markets misfired; you shouldn't be blaming the instructor, but the manufacturer!

N and I went to Pismo last weekend. We rented ATVs and rode on the Oceano sand dunes and also visited Hearst Castle. The ATV riding was just way too good! We want to go back .. and maybe this time even camp on the beach.

It's surprising that in the five years I lived in Santa Barbara, I never went to Pismo - although I had passed by so many times. Well, I hope to make it up now ..

3G Networks: Where's the bottleneck?

I read this blog by Om Malik (of gigaom.com fame) claiming that the biggest bottleneck for 3G networks in the backhaul network of T1 lines that connect the base stations and the rest of the Internet. Can that be true? Does he really think that while all the desktops and laptops around the world that are watching live streaming videos on the Internet with T1 lines are perfectly fine, the specific T1 lines that support a 3G network is screwed up? Ha .. can't believe he made such a comment..

But anyhoo .. a recent startup Ustream claims to have built an application that will allow live streaming on video to a large number of 3G phone simultaneously. I bet they haven't utilized multicast protocols in any way, but if they do succeed in streaming Obama's inauguration coming up in a few days, I will be mighty impressed at what they've accomplished!

Your own domain - free - why not?

I just renewed my domain name registration with godaddy.com, which I have had since the past 5 years now. The total amount I have spent on it over the years is 5 * $8 = $40. Now that amount isn't too much, but I believe that people should be allowed to register a domain of their own name http://www.firstname.[middlename.]lastname.com) free for life ... and why not?

I got my name for free when I was born - nobody, neither the hospital I was born in, nor my government has ever asked me to pay registration for it. I think with the web so integral to our lives, we should all have our domain name for free. Moreover, from now on, every baby should be assigned a domain name that is printed on their birth certificate. That way nobody can take it from you:)

ringtones for the iphone

A colleague suggested this site. The site looks awful, but serves a good purpose - they convert mp3s to ringtones, extract audio out of youtube videos, and also lets you browse through the ringtones that other members of the site have created.

Apps on my iPhone

I love downloading apps for my iPhone and trying them out. Most of them have been very crappy, but some I like a lot. I decided to list a few .. and if you are an iPhone user as well , suggest some useful apps to me.

- Bloomberg: This free app is a great resource for stock market updates. These days it has been the bearer of bad news most of the time, but it aint it's fault huh:)

- Pandora: A very nice free app .. the same music recommendation engine.

- AOL radio: I get a few old hindi songs and new indian songs as well.

- Palringo: Free chat..

- Flixster: lets you look for movies and book tickets as well ..

- Shazam: app to identify songs playing .. it records snippets of sound and sends you the name of the song, artist, etc

- Taxi Magic: this is a very slick app that lets you call a cab from wherever you are and also sends you updates on how far the cab is from your current location.

- Snaptell: take pics of products and books, and the app will give you links to buy and even reviews of the products.

- Labyrinth: this is one of the most impressive iphone games Iv played .. its implemented so well!

I used to love eating the plum cakes sold at the Bandra fair every year. So I tried making a drunken berry fruit cake myself, and it turned out super! I abstain from bragging most of the times, but these were really good. N and I finished one entire loaf in one go:)

Reno and Tahoe

N and I went to Reno and Tahoe during the christmas weekend. (Send me an email if I have not sent you our pictures). The trip was great. We left MV early on Friday morning for Reno to avoid getting hit by the usual traffic backups on highway 80 because everyone from the bay area takes that freeway to go to either south or north lake tahoe and reno. fortunately the roads were congested only after we crossed the snowline and reached a 6000 foot elevation.

For someone who spends a lot of time in non-snowy areas, the sight of snow-topped mountains and coniferous trees is very exciting .. and excited we were! Unfortunately, if you do live in non-snowy areas, you don't realize the challenges in driving on icy roads and in low temperature conditions. Once we drove above the 6500 feet elevation, the temperature dropped to 15F. At one point, a large truck drove past us throwing a lot of dirt on to our windshield .. and so I used the water spray to clean it. Only a little spurt of water came out of the water-spray and before it hit the windshield, it had already frozen into ice crystals in mid-air. and then I believe all the water inside the spray had frozen. It was absolutely scary to drive a distance while looking ahead only through the few clear streaks on the windshield. We stopped at a gas station at a city called Truckee and bought some freeze-resistant windshield liquid to avoid driving part-blind. We intended on doing a snowmobile tour in Truckee, but all the spots on the two tours they had that day were taken.

So we just headed to Reno. Reno to me looked like a poor man's Vegas. The main strip area was very short, although some of the casinos such as Circus Circus had free trapeze shows. We had pizza for lunch and then walked around the other casinos. We had a room at the Sienna hotel. Positives - they give out a plate of dessert every night to each guest! Negatives - nothing to do at the casino, and their swimming pool and jacuzzi were out in the open:( (it was 20F in Reno).

The next day we drove to the northern rim of lake tahoe. Unfortunately the roads were too icy and slippery, and most of the parking lots next to the lake were also blocked with snow. So we drove to the Northstar ski resort. This ski resort is one of the best I have gone to. It is owned and developed by the ritz-carlton group and they'd built a neat village area with restaurants, heated cabannas, and drinks carts. That afternoon we had pizza again (yeah, most of the highly-reviewed restaurants in the area were pizza places .. no complaints from me;). We ate at Paluso's NY pizza .. nice thin crust!

We did the river walk along the Truckee river in Reno. There was this little ice rink there as well.

That night we hung out at the Atlantis and Peppermill casinos in Reno. We had dinner at this awesome mexican cucina called 'Miguel's'. They had good tortilla chips, very good service, awesome blended margaritas, and yummy spicy burritos and enchiladas! N isnt a fan of mexican food, but even she enjoyed the meal. We got back to MV on Sunday afternoon .. nice trip overall!

Slumdog Millionaire

N and I went to see Slumdog millionaire last night. It was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Kudos to the story writer and the director for being so creative and original! The concept was so different - not the cliche that we are so used to watching - and it must take a brilliant mind to conceive such a work of art!

The Oscar committee does not have to work too much this year on picking out the best movie .. this one is clearly a winner!

N and I went to downtown sausalito earlier this week. we hadn't been there in all these years we've been staying here. sausalito has now officially become my favorite place to go have a cup of coffee next to the ocean with a view of san francisco without too many people buzzing around you:) there are a number of boutiques selling clothes and local artwork; a few restaurants ranging from simple cafes to ones with valet parking; there are motels by the sea; numerous coffee shops; but the best part of this downtown are were some of the homes situated right by the ocean as you can see in the picture below! Wish I could own one of these some day, or maybe just rent 'em for a night:)

startups during bad economic conditions ..

only those tend to survive that have a proven business model. a set of startups that I believe do not have a proven model are the public wifi and even wimax companies. this does mean that the technology is flawed and nor am I questioning the technical soundness of these technologies; I think that they have not been able to find a market that is ready to consistently pay for their products or services. examples of such startups are tropos, meraki, firetide, and now wichorus. most of these startups have spent years developing their technology, blowing through (hundreds of) millions of dollars of cash without really proving that they can eventually make any money for themselves. what is it that these companies can do to turn the tide? and do that quickly before the auto makers (and whoever else is on their way into bankruptcy) swallow all the tax money that they were expecting to come their way?

Is this an attempt at driving traffic to his wife's company in which Google has a major stake? I hope not. I think when people blog with the intention to driving revenue to their own or an affiliate business, the blog is not as appealing to me. I think, bloggers, especially influential people should keep everything neutral.

I had the same problerm with Avinash Kaushik, when I thought he was trying to sell his book by including references in his blog posts. But then he said once that all the proceeds from the sales of his book go to charity and he does not consume anything; which is still better.

Fonolo presented at Mobilize 2008 (http://gigaom.com) .. and I think they won the contest as well. But the reason I write about them is that I am impressed at their idea, very unique, no social network BS, and most of all, its a service just about everyone would want to use because of how painful it is to navigate through help-desk phone menus before you can get to an agent.

I hope they can crawl the phone space well enough, which ofcourse is the main challenge for them. I guess, to attack this problem, they too can resort to tonchidot's funny, albeit stupid response at techcrunch50 - 'Imagination' and 'Join Us':)

how many more websites?

Looking at the companies that are presenting at techcrunch, one big question that comes to my mind is 'how many more websites is someone supposed to visit each day'? I'm sure every company believes that they will get a million visitors by the end of the year because their website offers a service that nobody else offered before, or they just did it better .. but I pity ourselves, the users, on trying to consume so much information! It will be ironical of me to say that there should be a website that tells you which website to use for a certain task; or better yet, we go back to the 411 age, where we dial in and ask someone.

I have been following techcrunch50 and all the stealth-mode startups that are presenting at the conference. (Following up via their website ofcourse). The one startup that I liked was 'swype' - a very unique method of data entry! The idea is to allow users to swipe lines between characters on a qwerty keyboard, and the application guesses words (auto complete) before the user has reached the last characters .. I hope this company does well!

The other company is FitBit .. not sure I completely understand their product, but its about a tiny device that you carry, and it collects health information and posts it on the web every time you pass by it's receiver.

Gilroy Garlic Festival

N and I went to the Gilroy Garlic Festival 2008 this weekend. I thought it was a great setup. The festival took place in some sort of a farm. There were large parking lots where we parked and were then bussed to the festival grounds. We paid $12 for entrance .. worth it you ask? - questionable!

Wait, wait .. before you think this was a festival with fireworks or games or rides .. well, there were some of those, but most of the place was full of food stalls. Funny though, only some stalls served 'garlicy' stuff:) My favorite was the free garlic ice-cream stall that had a long wait line - wonder why?! the lady handed us two mini-cones of icecream .. delicioso!! we bought three pieces of garlic bread for $2.50 - good, with little garlic and lots of butter!! I also had a corn on the cob with garlic butter sauce smeared onto it. N got herself a small bag of garlic caramalized pop-corn - they were good, but the caramalization had made them a tad bit too sweet.

There were beer stalls all over, and almost everyone legally allowed to buy alcohol had a glass or a festival mug with them. It was hot on that farm, so a little cold beer is always great! We walked around getting pictures of the stalls and also found a large garlic-on-fire!;) One stall was selling roasted crawdads, frog legs, gator tails and who knows what not was in the mix .. while I don't indulge myself with the crustacean family all that much, people at the festival were sure loving them!

From heiroglyphics to tweets to ..?

I read an article the other day while waiting for my turn at the salon. It's quite ironical that I don't even remember the name of the author or the source .. and here's why it's so ironical -The articles discussed how Internet search engines and every which online product out there has made us used to reading less day after day. Just think to yourself .. when you want information about something, you just type it in the yahoo or google search bar and see a bunch of results. You might even find the answer to your question within the little text snippet that each of these search engines provide with their results. This activity of ours has had an negative impact on our ability to read .. we read less, and look less, and therefore absorb less .. is it making us stupid? Just take this example of mine .. I was reading the article and almost just eyeballed it to get the jist of the story and didn't really bother to remember who the author was. The author said that he does not feel like reading entire books anymore, and I totally agree with him.

Several hundreds of years back, man invented heiroglyphics to communicate .. then came the spoken language .. then the language took a written form so that knownledge can be spread to a larger population .. and now comes the web that might bring in the age of summaries, snippets, and tweets; and then what?

I flew Virgin America to San Diego last week and was super super duper impressed with their interactive entertainment system called RED. It lets you watch movies and TV shows interactively and also buy premium shows (yeah, i can hear you say 'many others let you do that too'), but they also let you (1) order food and drinks through a shopping mart. you add items to a cart, swipe your credit card on the system, and the order is wirelessly sent to the stewardesses in the aisles (slick, huh!); and (2) you can chat with people on the flight via a qwerty keyboard .. (look at the pic below .. it asked me to enter a nickname before i started chatting); and (3) play video games via a game console!!!

are some of the best I have seen ever. I make this comment without any bias whatsoever. Some of the american commercials I have seen, for instance the one by hotels.com where the hotel bell boy polishes the guests' leather jacket or the one where the bell boy opens the guests bag full of cash; I don't get the humor in them at all .. on the other hand, commercials such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuP79_txcPg or the KFC commercial with the four guys enjoying a tub of fried chicken even after their beatle hits a tree and flips on its head .. thet're awesome, simple and universally comprehensible ..

Found a job!

I finally found a job for myself .. its at a famous, probably the oldest portal out there!! Yay! I was mailed a t-shirt, a pen along with my offer letter today. The position title is also something that gives me a kick - a business planning and operations analyst!

I start in July and I am looking forward to it. Now I am looking up things to do before I start. Anybody have suggestions? (Yeah, like a thousand people read my blog and I expect to receive several suggestions tomorrow;) .. But on that note, I would definitely want to take up writing seriously at some time in my life. Its one activity that I will be thrilled to do right, because its so hard!)

Anyways, back to the job. I am excited because the company's not too far from my place, so the $4.30 for gas these days will not hurt. And better yet, the company shuttle picks people from a nearby train station .. so I can take the shuttle and save some more.

Another thing that excites me is that the company has a little coffee shop with baristas who make you any cup of coffee for free! .. Wow!

memorial day weekend trip

N, VT, and I went on a trip to Shasta, Klamath, and Crater lake. VT had planned a hike up Mt. Shasta with a mountaineering outfit, so he did that hike during the three days - while N and I visited Klamath and Crater lake.

Shasta was awesome .. especially the city as well as the caverns, the dam, and the siskiyou lake. I'd definitely recommend visiting Shasta if you'd like to relax on vacation. The city has some quaint little bed-and-breakfasts, several hikes, good walks, and a really great food joints: a coffee shop on mt. shasta blvd, and a mexican restaurant called Los Ramos are the ones that both N and I loved!

Klamath falls is a "sad" place to be in. It's quite a ghost town, and should be renamed Kalamithy Falls:):) First off, there aren't any falls there, and a nearby place called Fort Klamath has no fort at all!

We went to Crater lake .. the trip was great, the weather didnt play out really well and we could not do any of the interesting hikes around.

On our way back to Shasta to pick VT up, we went to visit the Lava beds monument. Thats the first time I'v seen lava chimneys and crawled inside lava caves .. very cool! I got some rock samples back ..

N had her first group kathak performance at their school, the Chhandam dance school of the famous Pt. Chitresh Das. Here is a picture of her just before the performance and a little clip as well.

Even Pt. Chitresh Das came by, and apparently he was in Santa Barbara during the last week performing at UCSB! .. He has a solo performance in September of '08, and I'd highly recommend going to the show if you are in the bay area. Kathak, to me is one of the most entertaining dance forms from India. It has its roots in the moghul empire. Iv seen other dances as well, but the story-telling and facial and body expressions in kathak are far more discernable to someone like me.

There were so many students performing, from little cute kids who looked at each for cues, to several moms-of-two who have been taking classes for over a decade!

NS's family flew in from India for a month long vacation. we went to pick them up at the airport. they brought sweets for us -- the first one are sugar-free sweets made of dry-fruits (mainly cashew nuts and pistacchio) and the second are cashew nut katris .. they are one of my favorites ... someone please stop me from gulping down one more .. [gulp]

http://getsatisfaction.com/ is a startup that allows your users to report bugs on your website. Now you don't have to implement a report-a-bug page anymore .. just link your webpage up, and users can type out their complaints within getstatisfaction.

I think they definitely should have chosen an alternative name .. getsatisfaction sounds a little shady .. ahem ..

and ofcourse, I also think that they could try providing their customers with blocks of code that the customer website can embed - so that they do not lose their branding, if they choose not to.

I saw this website this morning: http://reframeit.com/ . They are building a firefox plugin that lets you leave comments on parts of any website - text, pictures, and just about anything. You can even check out comments dropped in by other visitors to the same website.

This a a simple, but interesting service because sometimes one just wants to see what is important and does not want to miss anything that is. Of course, I think the kinds of websites that can benefit from such tagging (if I may call it that) are very few - blogs, personal websites, wikis, etc.; websites that have relatively static content.

I made a chocolate cheesecake on N's birthday. Below is a pic. It cracked open a little on the top because the layer was too thick (methinks). And this was my first attempt at making a cheesecake, so I guess this mishap is okay ;). Anyways, it tasted really great - I loved it!;)

google released their app engine (python based) a few days back and my friend AS was kind enough to invite me to try it out in his account. my quick thoughts:

1. it looks like google is seriously trying to compete in the infinite computing space market that amazon has a significant head start with - but since it is infinite computing - there is room for everyone.
2. it support python right now, and not ruby. i watched a demo online, and the implementation of applications are not as clean as RoR - but based on the comments, it is likely that google will be rolling out RoR support soon.

3. AWS and google app engine is likely to benefit anyone who intends to host a web application with high computational needs - and that is awesome! And even greater for rightscale.com

IDC suggested I try using ziphone for jailbreaking my ipod touch. while the ziphone is a really good tool to jailbreak and unlock the iphone, the number of useful applications that it allows you to install for the ipod touch seems distressing limited:( of course, i hope they increase them as soon as possible - just so that i can soon relieve myself of the guilt of erasing some of NM's hand-picked music that she had loaded on to the ipod;)

Several days back we - VT, CA, and myself, launched www.ijiny.com - a website that allows people in India to buy/sell/rent stuff or arrange meetups within their own cities. We are really excited about this project. We have been receiving a lot of reviews for the site, and also fixing a lot of issues that surfaced after the site went live :-( But i think that's okay - given that we are a bunch of first-timers to building a website in ruby on rails:) And of course, that way we follow Guy Kawasaki's principle of 'ship, fix, ship, fix, .. ' instead of 'fix, fix, fix, ..., ship'.!

Well, we hope to receive a lot more comments, while we think about ways to market the site.

I am posting after a while now .. and intend to post regularly from now. Thanks to IDC who inspired me to do so;)

Okay, so I finally created a bootup image of my entire mac - using the free version of superduper. (thanks IDC for that as well). the software is great, because it lets you create a boot image using a few clicks. It took about 6 hours for copying 80GB using a usb 2.0 external HD.

Later I may get the full paid version so I can schedule updates and not have it copy every single file each time. And also get a firewire cable to make it faster.

A warning is that super-duper does not do a simple copy of files. It does something to check for changes to the file system (i suppose) while the copy is going on. S o try not to run an application during the copy - it will stall.

on the drive from seattle to SB we dropped by at the oregon caves .. they are great. have calcium/marble formations inside. we toured inside. also its 42F all through the caves so if you plan on visiting make sure u have warm clothing with you .. and i definitely recommend stopping by or even staying at the hotel next to the caves ..

the downtown has one more fun thing for tourists .. a coupe cart that is GPS-enabled .. you can rent it for $40 an hour and drive around the streets. an audio guide fitted in the car will tell you different things about SB based on your location .. these should be fun to drive but we were a little late, i got a picture in one of them anyways .. these carts in SB can tip over if you drive at more than 10 mph:) they are almost as big as the smarte-carts europe has and the US may/might get some in 2008 .. imagine some of these parked on a road next to a navigator or a tahoe:) ..

it was JZ's last day and since there werent any chilean rests around .. spanish was the closest we could get :) .. so we - JZ, JS, MC, AG, and I got inside la tasca. they had some very authentic spanish cuisine. AG had a tough time trying to select his food. he basically can't eat onion, garlic, mushroom, egg, fried potatoes, fried anything else, and meat .. hmm, wats left? we ordered a round of tapas and sangrilla .. it was the best!! .. i loved it! .. the main course took an hour though .. it was a paella. looked and tasted just like the biryani and i presume it took as much time and effort to make it. paella, tapas, and sangrilla to go with it made for some awesome gastronomical pleasure;)

we went for thai because we hadnt in a long time - JZ, JS, AG, and I .. it was JZ's first stint at thai and he loved it! we had a lot of food .. or rather a lot of variety. the curries were great .. anyone visiting cambridge should try this place named bangkok city. its a small resturant, but the food rocks!

we were blessed last week .. none other than sachin tendulkar came by to play a charity match at cambridge .. the picture here will tell you how close i was to this mega-star of a guy. and to throw the cherry on the cake, he scored a 155 in the match in 116 balls ... and all i could say is 'whoaaa' .. i was soo impressed by how this dude is simply magic with his bat. simply magnificent .. there were richie richardson, courtney walsh, ajit agarkar, lewis, kaalicharan, rashid latif, chris cairns and many many more .. but this guy just proves himself to be the legend no-par!! ..

went for a day trip into the scottish highlands. . visited some of the very nice lochs (lakes) glens (mountains .. ofcourse - this is where all the super nice glen* whiskey comes from) and also went for a tour of a distillery that supplies some of their produce to the famous arthur bell blends .. we had some of their single malts, and the trip suddenly turned sooo worth the trouble:)

after a long wait i did finally go to scotland .. and it was all the more better because even mom hadnt been there, we flew to glasgow and then got onto a bus to edin-bra, as they call it. if i were to choose the best cities iv been to in the UK .. i would place edinburgh out on number 1 .. its got the old town with the castle on top of a volcanic mountain .. and the royal palace that is still in use on the bottom of the mountain. a single street connects the two and is known as the royal mile (for obvious reasons) .. ull find all kinds of shops selling kilts and whiskeys .. and ofcourse, a whole bunch of restaurants and rather old pubs to fashion up the place .. you will also notice the newer side of town seperated from the old by the princes gardens, the railway station and a few bridges .. buses and tourists galore in this city .. its one place worth a visit - although you should venturing out so north only during the summer iv been told .. :)

finally in the land of the beatles!! .. aha, i think i dunno no nothing abt liverpool more than the fact that the beatles started off here. and if you ever go to liverpool, you shouldnt obviously miss the beatles story .. ofcourse, in the process you will also land urself at the albert dock which is no longer a dock per say but since liverpool is on the bay that lets the north sea in .. albert dock has the reputation of being one of the richest docks. a dude named henry tate was also known to have made his fortune through trading sugar here in liverpool's albert dock .. (tate from the tate museums' fame) ..

manchester ..

as soon as we arrived at manchester .. it was obvious! .. even a blind man would know this city's excitement thrives on football .. the time we arrived was a little after england played a friendly game at old trafford .. the entire city was dressed in white and red england jerseys ... manchester police was all over the place .. but if you stop and look around .. there is something else you will notice abt mster .. their pubs .. they are huuugee and sooo many! .. i bet the nightlife in manchester is like no other ... we walked around, and got ourselves rooms at the YHA .. the YHA at manchester is one of the best iv lived at .. they have nice rooms and ofcourse .. a huuge breakfast offering that is next to none .. we walked around and had dinner at a place in china town .. im not sure if iv mentioned this before, but AG is one person who has 'the' most number of food restrictions you can eve think of .. he ordered for a chinese mixed vegetables thing and then he went 'could you not add onions or potatoes or broccoli or mushrooms or .... ' .. there were so many 'nots' on the waiters cards .. she was better off asing him what to add to the order rather than what to not:):) ... later in the night while walking around we noticed this loooong line of people trying to get into some large ground next to a river .. we asked them and they said there was some german play company doing a show named 'insect' and it was only one quid to watch ... so we went in just to see what happened .. it turned out to be the most hilarious/entertaining/funny/impressive/shocking play iv seeen .. it was about the world of insects .. and these guys had actually designed and made huge mechanical insects that you may notice in the pictures even .. these crazy insects farted .. spewed water and other liquids around .. burst fire crackers frm within their butts .. got pregnant and gave birth to smaller mechanical insects .. they created fake snow and rain and produced fire flames every which way possible .. if any of you were around, you would be convinced this was real entertainment for the cheapest possible price ever)::) ..

leeds is a modern town .. the touristy places inside the city center are shopping malls - thats how modern things can get:) .. as the story goes .. a few years back as london was becoming the center of business and trade, some business makers decided to move some money upwards to the north of england as an effort to expand business opps. Leeds happened to be the chosen city and thats why if you went to leeds all you can see is tall buildings and shopping malls .. a sharp contrast to cities such as york, which is only about an hour away from leeds .. a significant portion of the businessmen who then invested money is leeds live in a town north of leeds, which according to locals looks almost anomalous in comparison with the rest of the region around ..

visited york up north in yorkshire. btw, i went around this place last weekend but havnt had time to upload any of my blogs. so theyve been buffered up ever since. anyways .. coming back to york .. i kinda liked the place. it isnt too large. the york minster is famous because of how old it and the number of times a church or a chapel or a minster was built upon the same grounds in this region of england. this minster is about 1500 odd years old and even then there are remnants of earlier roman churches of sorts that are lined up under the basement of the current minster. york also has this wall running around the central portion of the city - on which you can walk on and get a quick view of the city center, the york minster and some of the gardens around .. the york city center was very entertaining .. there was all kinds of food and also a temp german beer garden going around .. we had lunch at a public park and then headed out towards Leeds ..

trip to ston ehenge and b ath!

last weekend i went to ston ehenge and bath. both in the sout hwest of en gland. these places were really hard to get to. I changed 13 different trains and 6 buses to go there and back! stonehenge was amazing, very impressive! it is one of en gland's most popular tourist places and the main attraction, is ofcourse, a stone h enge. the interesting thing is these stones are about 45 tonnes each, and were installed at stonehenge in 3000 BC!! The mysterious thing is, no one really knows what the stones are there for. some suggest that they indicate time or months because you can see the sunrise and sunset through them and determine the month of a year and the arrangement of stones mark the times of summer and winter solstice. but hauling 24 or more stones for over 300 miles and each stone took 600 men to haul across, doesnt make sense! some thought it was a sign of power and some think it is a temple of sorts for the sun God! in any case, they are worth a look. Bath was another pre-historic roman settlement i visited. the attraction here is a hot spring that flows into roman baths, that were used then as a place of holy worship. one thing was certain, these romans were up ahead on technology. they had built a 2 km underground tunnel that took the waste water from the baths to the nearby river, and the tunnel still does, to this date!! some of the bath areas were shaped in the form of a modern day sauna and next to the baths were these rooms that had rocks piled - functioning as heat sinks!!! - to avoid heat from passing over to the changing rooms next door:) the royal crescent and the circus at bath are worth a look. Oh BTW, during my visit to bath, I asked a local info desk about which restaurant i should go to, just so that i can try some of the local authentic cuisine. the guy asked me to visit a cafe name ' the boston tea party' whose falafel wraps were known to be super good .. this is hilarious. imagine, an indian was in a pre-historic roman settlement in england, and the best cafe had an american name and served middle eastern food!!

VM's last day at work!

It was VM's last day at work. he was off to India for a week and then was headed off to paris for another year. we went to an italian pizza joint that was located right next to the river cam. perfect day, almost like SB!

yoo hoo! well that is what you would have said if you'd come by cambridge's 33rd beer festival!! this was awesome. there was this huuge tent with small stalls within. 170 ales and 60 beers!!!! it was 2.5 quids to enter and 2 quids for a glass that you can choose to keep as a souvenir! and i did:) The beers were amazing, I havent seen soo many beers and so many beer drinkers (no unsporty revelry though). Another thing I learnt about the UK is that they eat cheese with beer. I didnt know you did that, but when I saw this large cheese counter I could resist getting a piece. they sold this large piece of bread and 15 different kinds of cheeses .. bread for 50p and a cheese slice for 1.5 quid. we all enjoyed tasting cheese and about 3 rounds of beer each .. half pints though:) Each half pint was close to 1.2 quids each. not bad. the german beers were the best, but the east anglian werent too bad. Oh BTW, if anyone offers you an english beer named 'doctors orders' .. RUN!! .. it is aweful. well, ofcourse, it is something like the swedish baske dore - which some like and others would want to pull their tongues out bcoz of the aweful taste, but i really had a bad time drinking this thing .. rest all was good. had a blast!

Trip to Oxford

Went to oxford. was a wonderful journey by bus - shockingly cheap - 7 pounds return!! .. if you are travelling within the UK it is interesting to note that train travel is way more expensive than bus travel. and also, if the bus happens to go into london or any airport, the cost jumps up disproportionately:) .. e.g. the cost to the airport 40 mins away is 20 pounds .. while to oxford and back which is a 3-hour ride one-way was just 7 pounds. Anyways, without dwelling on the pricing strategies of public transport - we got to oxford and visited some of the 'upscale' colleges. I will admit they are very impressive - considering they are like a million years old:) The museums were strictly okay - IMHO. They say that the ash mo leum is the oldest museum around. Yes, they do have a little collection to boast about - but not as awesome as some of the other ones you may visit in london and paris;) oxford is a nice town, almost similar to cambridge - i hope it is politically correct to make such comparisons. For another history fact - a riot spurred in oxford between the town's residents and the students which resulted in several deaths. as the story goes, the residents of the town were a little sick of the the students. some students therefore fled - creating the other college town of cambridge! ..

Cooking Italian

MC invited 2 of his friends A and G. they were fun. A was so drunk after a 4 (?) glasses of wine - she could hardly get onto her bike while leaving for home! ..

the colleges in this town are really old .. imagine, newton 'invented' gravity while he was here:) .. the best part is that the colleges still follow a very strict tradition and also maintain the building really well. the lawns especially are so well done .. and expensive to maintain .. you have to be a 'fellow' of the university to step onto the grass .. in the early times, the colleges had a huge problem of ducks getting onto the lawns. to avoid having to deal with the ducks, the colleges declared each duck in the vicinity - a fellow of the college, so they can then freely trample all over the place .. :):)

only if I had known ealier .. this place is named after a bridge over the river 'cam' .. i always thought the river was nicknamed 'cam' because it flowed through cambridge.. see the punts in the river .. punts are flat bottom boats that are a 'must-do' tourist attraction here and some other places .. the water is about 6 feet deep .. so its easy to reach the bottom using the pole ..

A 'closed' trip to London!

here is a funny trip we had to London last week. there were so many things/places closed, we actually thought there were supernatural forces acting against the three of us - AG, JZ, and myself! .. there are photos attached to this blog so would notice the other two guys on the trip ..

well, we take off on sunday morning at around 8 am .. ride out bikes to the train station here. the trains are more expensive to ride on, but they are much faster .. so we decided to take the train. we buy our tickets and it only then are we told that there were no trains from cambridge to royston. but there was a bus we had to take. the bu ride was going to be 30 minutes - which is almost half way to london by a direct train. the bus ride wasnt bad - because it reminded me of the buses in India - a double-decker old cranky, and ready to fall apart. (focourse, the buses now are really good back home!!) anyways, we reach royston and turns out that the direct train to london wasnt available - so we had to take the slow train:(:( which took us 1 hour to Kings Cross. we get off at king's cross and the officials say that the station was shutdown for tube travel. aha:( .. so we get onto another national rail train which appears only 30 mins later .. in london, AG and JZ hadnt seen most of the typical toutisty things - so we headed off to the usual big ben parliament buckingham tour .. it was entertaining because AG lost his travel guide at one place .. then bought another one .. and lost that one at another location :):) .. we walked around everywhere - including soh_o and such;) .. other places were nice. the tower of london which is definitely a very expensive place to get in - was okay until we got to the royal jewels house. the place is like a giant bank locker .. and it has all kinds of stuff that the royal family (well, ofcourse:)) wore .. even the koh i noor was there .. wow!!!!

later we followed the travel guide I had and also picked a restaurant that was well-known for indian thalis (unlimited food for 4.50 pounds:) it took us 30 minutes on the tube and walking to find this freaking place - which when we got there was closed (about a month ago):( .. then after a long deliberation we decide to get pizza from pizza hut (yeah, i know - from yummy indian thalis to pizza .. but anyways:() we get to the pizza hut and lady at the next table was having a fight with the manager about some crazy ingrediant in her pizaa she wasnt told about. obviously, the staff almost had nothing to do but to look at what was happening .. after 15 mins of us deliberating over which pizza which should order and crazy and complex computations over which meal package would have been the most cost friendly, a waitress walks over and takes out order. she leaves, and yes, again, she comes back with the stupid smile on her face (almost teasing our fate) and says that the pizza hut's oven was broken:(!@ .. ah .. but then ofcourse, we get a 2 pound coupon for a pizza at another pizza hut which was a couple of blocks away .. we go there and they say that something was broken and they would only serve us ONE kind of pizza and that too after a 40 min wait (grrrrr:() .. then we walk around .. a deep pan pzza place (which is typically a yummy pizza place to be - is closed! ) when we finally found a reasonably priced italian cafe - we went in and ordered food. the cafe was funny - it had food being bussed from a kitchen in the basement - using an elevator. this guy placed an order ticket on the floor of the elevator (along with dirty plates and spoons) and then let the elevator go down .. when the elevator button rang it was most likely someone's food inside .. this was bizarre .. we stoppped looking though, in the interest of not injuring our appetite for the food we ordered:( .. the best part was when we were trying to pay - JZ did not have cash on him. the bill was 20 pounds, and AG and I had 7 pounds each in our hand. dunno what happened to the waiter - he took the 14 pounds and said 'that was enough' .. whoa :):)

we had our food and got back onto the train to cambridge .. was a busy day .. interesting and funny at times!!

Me Italian, No me more Italian!

So i worked through my first couple of days at work here. Frankly they werent very eventful. anyways, but the nice thing is that this group of people working here are a small group and apparently do no follow all the customs necessary for them. for instance, no one carries an ID card, and other things. Anyways, they are all nice - so im happy. Ofcourse, what makes me happier is that they have this really cool (well, sometime warm and hot also) fully automatic coffee and espresso machine. AND - guess what - since they are british they have milk for the coffee - which believe me, can be painful to do without! They also have a soda dispenser which dispenses all kinds of free soda - but since i dont fancy gassy drinks, that is not very impressive.

anyways, speaking about people - we are a big group of interns i realized as i went around meeting the rest of the crew. 6 of us in total - which is kind of large for a research center that is only 8 people strong! there are 3 indians - AJ, AG, and VM, one chinese MH, one italian MC, and a chilean guy JZ - a very diverse set of us biased towards no single community;) the same day, when all of us met, we decided to visit the city center so that VM and MC who have been here over 2 months now, could show us around. we met on this street that goes over a river. the river is supposed to be a regular hangout among vacationing couples taking rides on punts/boats. BTW, these puntable boats are really narrow - and the punter stands on one end on the deck while he punts the boat. it is fairly scary to be standing on the deck because it is only about 2 feet wide. since we speak about punting in cambridge, it seems like the same kind of puntable boats at oxford have the punters punt from the non-deck side of the boat - 'only' to poke rivalry at the cambridgeshireans! - ah, these silly reverse-headed .. ;)

so, we meet - the 5 of us. MH did not come along this time. we all walk around a bit and then everyone's hungry. so we decide to treat ourselves because this was the first day we were all out together. Because the indian restaurants werent as highly rated, there werent any chilean restaurants - we opt to visit an italian place - suggested to be a 'good' place by the very italian Mr. MC.

We go to this place and are seated on the biggest table in the restaurant. strangely, not only were we the largest group visiting the restaurant - we were the youngest - the average age of the other patrons seemed to be almost as much as the sum of all ours! .. seriously!:) well, since we were there and terribly hungry - we began to select our main courses and wines. and ofcourse, MC took charge of making recommendations for the main courses and the wine-pairings too. some of took this opportunity to ask MC what some words in italian meant - and he was prompt in replying and providing some history and trivia about them too. at this point, the waitress walked in - looked and spoke very british. she started pouring water for all of us. at this very moment VM asked MC what pesces meant. well, that is what he intended to ask - although although to me and to the waitress - lets call her W - it sounded like pesto. MC was quick is saying the pesce was fish. but W was enraged!!!:):) with a jar of water swinging in her had - she said pesto was no way fish! thats it - that was enough to make our italiano macho bro MC a little red in the face. he said he knew pesces was fish. W said it cannot be - she has been a waitress at the restaurant for a while and she knows. MC -> u see, i know better because im italian. W -> well, my mom is italian so even i know. MC -> i just came here 2 months back - i know italian and i know pesces is fish. W -> ofcourse pesces is fish, but pesto is not - c'mon.

ahhh:) .. one italian and another half were fighting on being more italian than the other - while the 3 of us were worried they dont start flinging things at each other:) anyways, i think W gave up because she must have figured that MC was a customer and she should not be worrying him too much! phew - definitely a scene that the rest of the patrons werent or maybe they were enjoying:)

we ate - and later MC decided not to tip W at all .. haha! .. we laughed all the time we were there. the food was okay, the wine was also strictly okay - an italian chianti .. i forget the vineyard but it was from tuscany region. we walked back home in the dark. but again, cambridge is a great place to walk - when it isnt raining and is not too cold. well, we had fun - but those few minutes of when the tussle occurred were almost hilarious. i wasnt sure if i should have laughed sometime to settle the both down - but i definitely was within!!:):)

The view outside my window - wow! .. and some parts of the city center I visited. The city center, as I said, is almost like SB - but has a very British architecture.
